There are two types of search engine optimisation, On-Page and Off-Page, this quite simply divides the factors which impact SEO into two groups. Different search engines focus on different factors of your site when deciding where to rank sites on the natural listings.
Off-Page factors cannot be directly controlled by anyone as they aren't relating to anything directly on the site, there are techniques that SEO Experts have found which are extremely likely to affect these factors although nothing can be guaranteed. In contrast to this On-Page SEO factors can be changed by logging into the back of the website and amending certain features.
For example one of the key points that Google's rankings are driven by is the number of backlinks pointing towards your site, which cannot be acquired 'on site'. If these links are from websites which are from related markets and themes, and also have good PageRank (PR), then shows you as the authority site. Some people consider this as more important than On-Page SEO due to Google being one of the most powerful search engines, although every part of SEO is important.
Examples of Off-Page factors;
- Keyword Analysis & Competition
- Directory Listings
- Link Development
- Web Marketing
