The majority of people know what Meta tags are and believe that there is some sort of mystical use of them in terms of SEO (search engine optimisation), which results in page one rankings. However, ultimately Meta tags are not as significant in the present day of search engine optimisation. They used to be a key factor of SEO in the earlier days of search engines, and you could gain page one rankings just be stuffing them full of your keywords. Nonetheless, nowadays Google does not pay a lot of attention to the Meta tags. It would seem the only real purpose they stand for is to inform your competitors what you are trying to rank well for. But the Meta description tag is the only true tag worth using, as this is displayed on the search engine results pages (SERPs) underneath your title and link. Similarly to your Page title it should not be spammed with your keywords though. You should aim for the Meta description to be a short and to the point sales pitch for your website. This should be included as part of your SEO strategy.
