As with every industry, internet marketing and search engine optimization (SEO) have their good guys and bad guys. Some companies play by the rules while others use rather naughty techniques to try and better themselves. Here are just a few Black Hat techniques that should never be recommended:
Hidden Content
Hidden content, as the name suggests, is content that is not visible to the end user on the site. The idea is to stuff keywords within the code for the site to try and out fox the search engines. This very rarely works and will end up with the site being banned and black listed.
Meta Keyword Stuffing
Meta tags are used to inform search engines of the content on the page. The two meta tags reside between the tag of a page and should be used to describe the content on the page. When used incorrectly they can alert a search engine that a site is using spam techniques in an attempt to improve its ranking.
Doorway or Gateway Pages
Doorway or Gateway pages are fake pages that are stuffed with content and highly optimised for a small amount of keywords that link to a landing page. The pages are designed for search engines and not for the end user as they are automatically redirected to the target page.
