The basis of a Link Campaign is to put external links of your site onto other sites that are themed to your business. This is called a Backlink. This is in order to maximise off-page SEO activity and you can only benefit from creating backlinks if that links is on a site that relates to your business.
For example if your business is Golf, Google will consider sites that are about golf, golf clubs, golfing holidays, sport, sport equipment etc....However Google will not consider links that are about baby toys, estate agents, food, etc... This stops people linking from any kind of site just to improve their SEO. Google will only recognise and take into account themed and related links and use this to improve your page rank and to help improve your natural listing positions on search engines. You have to be realistic when it comes to linking to related sites. You are not going to get links that are 100% related to your business, this maybe because your business is quite niche or those links are companies that are in direct competition with you and they will therefore won’t want to link to your site.
You may now be thinking to yourself, what is a good page rank to link to? Anything above a Pagerank of 2 is considered good. Pagerank 1 is a bit low and you will not gain anything from a site that has a Pagerank of 0. Obviously the higher the page rank the better but the higher the link the more difficult it will be to link to this.
There are 2 main types of backlinks that you can have. You can create one-way links, which only benefit your site or you can exchange links with any partner sites that you may have. It is recommended to have all non-reciprocal links as this has increases the benefits that you will receive.
Link building campaigns are very useful to get involved in as it creates more backlinks to your site and the more backlinks the better as it helps improve your Pagerank thus resulting in your site to be considered more relevant by Google and therefore boosting your positions on the natural listings.
