Search Engine Optimisation is a long term process to get your website to the top of the rankings, but once there you can relax slightly and it will be the cheapest form of your internet marketing. In comparison, Pay Per Click is a very expensive way of advertising your website, especially if you do not have a qualified agency optimising it for you, and consumes a huge amount of money each day no matter how long you do it for.
SEO is a different story, it can have a reasonably expensive initial cost for the first 12 months depending on your website/ market but after that first year you will have got a good head start and may be able slow down and reduce the costs. In a year you can target say 10 keywords and get page 1 results for those keywords, they may only be the main terms you want to target so that will be enough and therefore you will only need to do the minimum to maintain those results, or you can target another 10 keywords in the next year.
You shouldn't expect amazing SEO results immediately because it's nearly impossible. There are lots of reasons affecting each SEO project, even if you manage to obtain 1000's of inbound links and 1000's of pages of content within the first few weeks of your site going live then your brand new domain will still pull down your results because you're not reliable enough for Google. Going for a 12 month plan will keep your expectations realistic and give you a good chance to build up the content and backlinks slowly so you will be trusted by the search engines and continue to be relevant to keep your top results for the whole period.
