In Russia it may come as a surprise to know that the most popular search engine is Yandex.ru and not Google.ru.  Yandex attracts over 11 million uniques visitors a day.

It is important when trying to optimise a website for a foreign market, in this case SEO for Russia, that appeciation is given to local search habits aswell as terminologies.  As with any website the key to good rankings is to deliver relevant content with a localised context.  Search engines will in return reward you in turn with high rankings in SERPs.  For example a website hosted in St. Petersburg or Moscow will always be favoured by the search engines for a Russian audience, and ofcourse it would be only natural to expect the content of the site to be translated in the local language of Russian and using the cyrillic alphabet.

Let's not also forget that for a Russian website it might also be appropriate to register a .su domain as well as the more widely known .ru ccTLD, referring back to the previous era of the Soviet Union.

Top tips for SEO for Russia

1) Host your website in Russia

2) Register both .ru and .su domain names

3) Write your content in an SEO friendly manner using both russian an english text versions

4) Obtain high quality authoritative links from other localised sites
