It is well known that attaining backlinks for your site can help improve your Google PageRank and also your SERP’s rankings, however not all links are good for your site and some can be very damaging.
Links from websites that have been banned from search engine results will not be good for your SEO, if you are linked to a blacklisted site then you will be seen to be associated with them and could well be penalised by search engines for this. Search engines regularly update their blacklists so you must be careful which sites you are linking to. If your backlinks can be seen as being obvious link exchange projects then it will not gain you any benefit.
Free For All link farms are an easy way to get links for your site, but there is no point in doing so. Search engines will devalue a link if it has no relevance to your site and also if that site contains hundreds of other links to random sites. One or two bad links won’t affect your site but if your whole link profile is made up of links from bad neighbourhoods you could be penalised.
It is not just inbound links that can affect you, some link projects are for reciprocal links and therefore your site will be sending outbound links to these bad neighbourhood sites. Linking to sites that are already banned from Google, could also get you banned from their SERP’s.
