We all want to make sure that our customers can find our business easily, this is the sole aim of SEO as an industry and the single target of our SEO strategies. But don't forget that being easy to find does not limit you to on-site tactics. Search Engines themselves sometimes give you a leg up and this is certainly the case with Google Local.
Google Local is in a position to become the greatest resource for all internet users and local businesses. In basic terms it is a simple directory service, but this gives you the opportunity to submit your details directly to google for the first time. Another clever trick up Google Local's sleeve is tying the local listings with the last searched location on Google Maps so that if a user types in a search and then views the results on the map they will see pins in the map identifying local businesses of the type that they searched for, which will include yours if sign up!
Currently the system isn't using geolocating to place search origins but it is only a matter of time until this feature becomes part of the system and while it hasn't been stated that businesses on Google Local are treated as being more authoritative by a normal Google search, one would assume that Google's algorithms are probably designed to give a bit more weight to the site, if only because they have in-system verification of the subject of the site and can determine the relevancy of the site that much more accurately.
So what are you waiting for? Sign up and get the benefit of direct presentation to local customers and a probable boost to your website's authority!
