SEO friendly URLs on Facebook

Since the beginnings of Facebook the site has operated completely dynamically, loading content into page frameworks from the database. This practice is the backbone of all content managed websites and nearly all ecommerce websites. Unfortunately this creates very long and impossible to remember URLs. The usual way to get round this is to create a virtual URL that is easier to remember by humans, and also can be used by search engines as another way to verify the relevancy of the page of content.

Facebook have recently introduced vanity URLs which do roughly the same job as the virtual, SEO friendly URL generated by a CMS. These vanity URLs are assigned on a first come first served basis so it'd be wise to get your skates on and grab yours before someone else does.

As with any URL you choose you must make sure that it is relevant to the content of the page, in fact Facebook make this slightly easier for you as the choices of vanity URL you are given are generally put together by review of the keywords of your account. If you are renaming an existing account you may want to consider instead, opening a new account that can be fully optimised from the word go.
