As with any industry involving computing and the internet, Search Engine Optimisation has its own set of buzz words, three and four letter acronyms, and phrases that mean something very significant to the SEO expert but sound like a load of flammel to us mere mortals.
Here at SEO Junkies we are more interested in sharing our addiction rather than trying to confuse you and so here are a few terms with which to demystify yourself and help you with your SEO campaign.
PageRank is the raw number describing the importance of your page as assessed by the Google algorithm it is not just a measure of the importance of the information but also the credibility and transparancy of your useful data.
Similar to a backhander (although not in any way negative) backlinks are html links back (see what we do there?) TO your website from an external source site. These links improve your PageRank in two ways. Google's algorithm assumes that if your site is linked by another person, then it must contain worthy data of some kind. Also Links channel PageRank, so this naturally gives your page a boost.
This is a blog. As well as being a fun and informative method of sharing information with the world blogs serve a useful purpose by adding tons of content to your site which helps you increase the relevancy of your site to your chosen search terms.
Latent Semantic Indexing or LSI is one method by which google assesses the relevancy of a page by compiling a list of similar meaning words for repetitive words in your page. The difference from a normal wordsearch and catalogue is that the meaning behind the repeated words is assessed in context to other repetitive words on a page. This is why it important to write content with good grammer and to reinforce key words with non ambiguous phrases that are indicative of your themes and topics.
On Page SEO is the optimisation of your site itself, controlling everything you have direct ability to control in order to make you site as attractive to the search engines as possible.
Off Page SEO is the tactical operation of influencing factors outside your direct control to make you site attractive to the search engines. This may include building relationships with outside sites in order to gain a few backlinks or observing seemingly effective keyword combinations to try in your On Site SEO campaign in the hopes of improving your PageRank.
