One of the main precepts for a search engine's rating of a web page is the relevancy of the content to the main themes and topics of the site as a whole and the page in particular. As this is determined by assessing the keyword density (roughly speaking the process is to check the headings of the page and the frequency of related words to determine the subject of the page, and thus the expected keywords of the text) it pays to increase the amount of keyword rich content on your site.
Keyword Density is the watchword for your content, keep in mind the keywords and phrases you wish to target and try to use them as much as possible - without ruining the grammar of your content. Search Engines know how english should be constructed and don't respond well to Jargon or colloquialisms.
This content can take many forms but other factors influence the authority that search engines assign to a website. One such factor is the frequency of updates. The highest authority sites tend to be news sites and social sites with a high update rate. The same can be seen with the types of content you use. A page of content is great for keeping the site grounded to a topic but regularly updated articles about that topic give the site more authority and increase its placement in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages).
