Increased Security for Gmail
Entered by: Carl @ 17:42:00 on 01/03/2010In 2008 Google gave all Gmail users the option to use https so that your mail was encrypted as it travelled from the internet browser to the Gmail servers however this was not mandatory and so many people have choose not to us this which in turn has left a lot of mail accounts open for someone to hack into the account.
However since the attacks that Google recently suffered that originated from China on thousands of human rights activists accounts which Google stated had not been successful and only small account information was gained they have decided the risk to Gmail accounts is far too great and so have taken the step to increase security for all Gmail accounts by using https as mandatory and not optional as it was before.
Although this is obviously going to increase the security of your Gmail the downside to this means that data will take longer to transfer due to the encryption that needs to take place, the other good news is that Google have changed this as a default for Gmail so there is no need for you to change anything in your account. This appears to be the first step that Google have taken in wake of the China attacks and so keep your eye out for any further developments on the security of Google and Gmail.
