SEO is not something that can be guaranteed or predicted, it is different in every case, and no two projects are the same. One main reason for this is that there are so many different markets in the business industry and they all have different target users.
Whether your target market is mainstream or niche can greatly affect your SEO project. Large industries attract a lot of businesses and obviously create a lot of competition between companies, therefore search engines produce a high number of results for main keywords and phrases. If the keywords for your market have high search results, over about 10 million, it makes it extremely difficult to optimise your site enough to make the first few pages.
If your firm is targeting a rather small, niche market then the search engines may provide less results and therefore making it easier to rank higher than other sites.
Another point to mention is that it is key for SEO that you do have a market, know who you are targeting and therefore know what keywords relate to the market to base your SEO on. Without the correct keywords for your site, which come directly from information about the target market, your SEO project will not succeed. As SEO is for the natural results on search engines it takes into account any related content, not necessary full of keywords but written naturally around a subject. This way having content on your site relating to loads of different markets would be harder to optimise.
