If you have ever used Twitter you will know that the micro blogging social networking site is hugely popular worldwide, Twitter even has a vast number of celebrities as members enjoying all that the website has to offer.

Twitter was set up by Jack Dorsey in 2006 and based on the concept of sms messaging, although the site has gained worldwide notability Twitter has never actually made a profit.

Social networking sites are businesses like any other and in order to operate and meet the costs involved in doing so they must produce some form of income and by far the easiest and most popular way is internet marketing. Many social networking sites already integrate advertising modules into their websites to generate income, such as Facebook which supports a number of paid advertisements on the left hand side of user’s homepages.

Twitter have recently announced their intention to introduce advertising onto their search feeds as a way to increase revenue. The announcement has divided opinions of avid Twitter users and internet marketing experts.
The most common opinions from Twitter users are that they do not wish to be bombarded with advertising as it would affect the way in which they interacted with the website. Twitter have assured users that they will monitor the internet marketing campaign to ensure it is popular and if it fails to achieve their key goals it will be scrapped.

Views from internet marketing experts are varied with many expressing that they feel it could endanger the popularity of the Twitter. A large number of industry experts are of the mindset that provided the campaign is implemented correctly then it is a positive change that allows the site to continue operating. The change also gives the opportunity for Twitter to be further explored as a key internet marketing tool within social media optimisation.

One might wonder why in this day and age people still want something for nothing, Twitter needs to pay its bill just like any other business and if it is a choice between carefully placed adverts that may interest you and the site shutting down, I know which one I would go for.
