There is no doubt that social media is being utilised as a key online marketing tool in a number of industries but in the build up to the British general election one may wonder whether social media optimisation could in anyway influence the general election results.
In my opinion there are two ways in which social media could potentially influence the British general election. The first of which and in my opinion the most important is the publicity factor. The main two social networking sites Facebook and Twitter have in excess of 400 million users around the world. With a large proportion of British internet users frequenting these sites including a high number of first time voters it is highly possible that Facebook and Twitter general election debates and pages will play a key part in a first time voters decision.
The debates on Facebook and Twitter are set to draw in a diverse range of the British public including established voters. The second way in which social media optimisation could affect the general election is by influencing established voters to change their allegiance. The likelihood of the two social networking sites being used as sounding boards for many people’s opinions and debates between users is high, with a good argument some may be swayed.
One thing is for sure social media optimisation is taking off in a big way, we will have to wait and see to what extent it influences the general election but it is sure to have some effect.
