While this blog mainly talks about what can help improve your SEO, I thought it would be a good idea to point out some factors in which to stay clear of.
Low quality and reciprocal links
It is absolotuely vital the links you are backlinking to are worthwhile. By this I mean high in relevancy to your site, of a decent page rank and not reciprocal. this is important as good qaulity inbound links will get you up the top whereas poor quality links will have a reverse effect. Links that ae in bad neighbourhoods, irrelevant to your business, reciprocal or link exchanges are a waste of time and money.
Hidden Text
Now some people may think this is a clever thing to do but it isn't, Google will scope out and find the text that is the same colour as its background and could lead to Google banning you from the listings. It conflicts with web standards, so we strongly recommend you do not do this.
Spamming
This is a common term you will come across in the SEO industry, in a nut shell it means deceiving the spiders that read the code when it comes to SEO. The most common example of this is using the same keywords for anchor text and bold. There are people out there who seem to think that if you fit any one keyword as many times as possible, Google will recognise this as imporant and therefore rank you higher, however this is inaccurate, it only applies dependant on how many words you have on that page that are relevant to that specifc keyword.
Duplicate Content
Fresh new content is extremley important. Originality about certain keywords you are aiming at is what Google is looking at and you will be penalised by Google if you plagiarise another sites content.
Flash and Javascript sites
Flash and Javascript sites are not very advantageous towards SEO as the search engine bots simply cannot read them, meaning there isn't much of a chance of getting realistic rankings. Search engines read the sites code to decide on how to rank it, whether if it's relevant or not, compared to the other sites that are of same relevance.
