Yesterday, social media optimisation enthusiasts everywhere were disappointed to find that their Klout scores had mysteriously dropped.
Apparently this was due to the fact that Klout have recently changed the algorithm they use to measure influence. They are claiming that the new algorithm will provide a more transparent insight for social media marketing, more deeply measuring how you are performing across social media platforms, as well as including Google + and Word Press accounts in their algorithms.
However, social media optimisation experts are not happy about the immediate results, despite any long term gains that may be lurking in the future. Followers of social media marketing are more concerned with the fact that the techniques Klout have previously been pushing as being beneficial to your social media influence actually now seem to be working against them. They now have to rethink their strategies and attempt to work out how the new algorithm works.
What is further frustrating to social media marketing fans is the fact that Klout do not release any of their algorithms to the public, meaning that we cannot even be sure that Klout is a good measurement of influence and we certainly do not know if this new algorithm is more accurate than the former one.
Outrage at the new Klout algorithm has resulted in Klout users turning their own tools against them, with social media optimisation experts implementing the hashtag #occupyklout to get their angry tweets noticed. A barrage of angry blog comments also followed the release of their blog announcing the new changes.
Still, this is only the initial outburst. We will have to wait a bit longer in order to justify whether this new algorithm is worth these early bumps or not.
