Crucial Keywords

At the start of any SEO campaign the first and most important step is to research and decide upon selected keywords. There are a number of easy to use online tools that can help you complete your keyword research, and although it can be quite time consuming, it can represent a small step for you, but can be one giant leap for your website!

The keywords that are researched and eventually concluded should all be related to your specific product/service and organisation. It is these keywords that should be the focal point of any content you create, thus helping the search engines determine its subject matter and relevancy.

The keywords you have will split into different types. These types include branded and non branded keywords, and both will be either long tail or short tail.

Branded keywords – this type of keyword are specific to either your business name or the product/service you offer (assuming it is only available from you!). It is this type of keyword that often has higher conversion rates, due to the increased likelihood of people searching with intent to buy as they are already familiar with the brand/product/service. Branded keywords can also contain your URL or any easy misconceptions such as misspelt similarities.

Non-branded keywords - Obviously these refer to the opposite of branded, and are words that are not directly related to your specific company name. They are more general terms that relate to the industry of the product/ service you offer. Non branded keywords often give a better representation of the success of your SEO campaign. If they are providing a high conversion rate it can represent good ranking results and a good source of traffic from people who are not directly searching for your company/product. Especially if you are not a market leader in your industry. It is however still very important for an SEO campaign to include branded keywords as well.
