If you need a way to improve your SEO (search engine optimisation) results simply and effectively, why no take a look a look at your title tags?

What is a title tag?

A title tag is the line of text that is normally displayed at the top of the browser window. These little slivers of text could be said to be the most important SEO tags for any site, as the search engines tend to look at these first when crawling your page.

How do I optimise my title tags for SEO?

For maximum search engine optimisation, the maximum length of a title tag to be displayed is between 60-70 characters, with 67 or less for Google. If your title tag is over 70 characters, it will be cut off on the search results page, meaning your call to action will lose its impact.

Why are title tags important to SEO?

Search engine spiders use title tags as their main source for determining the page topic if they can't find a theme within your main text. Spiders or crawlers therefore examine the title and use it to establish the topic of the page, which should be easy if you've done your SEO properly. This is one reason why it is always good idea to put at least one keyword in the title tag, and to place them as close to the beginning of the title as possible.

Remember, the text included in the title tag is also the text that will appear as the link in the SERPs (search engine results pages.) Search engine users will effectively be clicking on your title tag in order to access your page. This obviously has direct connotations for SEO, as it means that fixing the title tags can generate quick and significant improvements in your rankings.

Use this process for all your site's pages, and remember to create unique titles for each one, making sure that they're relevant. This will greatly improve the effectiveness of your title tags and increase the search engine rankings for your SEO keywords.
