Search engine optimisation or SEO for short, has become a massive part of many online businesses marketing campaign. However many businesses stop at SEO when in fact there is a whole world of online marketing techniques based around SEO, here is how Search engine optimisation, search engine marketing and internet marketing as a whole can work together to create a successful online business!

The History of Search Engine

Years ago before search engines were created, the internet was just a massive collection of file transfer protocol (FTP) sites, which users would have to search for individually. Eventually in 1990 a man called Alan Emtage created a search engine named “Archie”, this first search engine inspired many people to create more search engines including Larry Page who developed and launched Google which later became the biggest site in the world! When website designers realised they would receive more traffic and therefore more revenue by being top of the search engine, SEO was then created and in time would be adapted and expanded to start the surge of SEM and Internet Marketing.

The relationship between Search engine optimisation and SEM

SEO is a branch of SEM which stands for search engine marketing, SEM is a branch of the huge world of internet marketing. The idea of both SEO and SEM is to market products and services across the internet. SEO looks more at being top of the search engines through the use of design, content optimisation and development.

Search engine marketing looks at the bigger picture, it can include SEO, SMO (social media optimisation and SMM ( social media marketing) all of these together make up the world of internet marketing. When we look at the relationship between SEO and SEM we can see lots of connections that interact these marketing techniques together. For example a business might invest in Search engine optimisation and be on page one, however to get there they may need to implement SMM, so the relationship can be very close, as you will benefit more by using both SEO and other various SEM techniques.

SEO and Internet marketing as a whole

In conclusion search engine optimisation can be described as more of the scientific side of internet marketing, which looks at design, development and user ability to get a site to the top of the search engine. This is what most businesses will concentrate on when they look at online marketing. Whereas SEM looks at the bigger picture of internet marketing such as SEO, SMO and SMM, these parts along with conversion rate optimisation and PPC campaigns are extremely effective marketing techniques which more companies should consider looking into alongside their usual SEO campaigns.
