There are many factors we look at for SEO or search engine optimisation, one factors that is slightly over looked is W3C and WAI compliancy, this blog will look at what these are and how it can hinder or help our search engine optimisation efforts.

What Is W3C?

W3C is an abbreviation for World Wide Web Consortium. In October 1994,Tim Berners-Lee founded the W3C, approximately 5 years after he founded what we would now call the internet. W3C is a worldwide organisation which provides guidelines which every website should be structured around and created. It is not a legal requirement to be W3C compliant for SEO or in general, there are a number of reasons why as a website owner you should do the most you can to make sure you are compliant.

How W3C works with SEO?

Search engine optimisation works heavily with Google and allowing robots to crawl the site as easily and as quickly as possible. By making sure your website is compliant to the W3C standards you are ensuring that not only do you have an easily crawlable but you also have a good basis for creating keyword rich content, which is vital for SEO!

W3C guidelines mainly look at the coding of a website; this in turn can affect your content-to-code ratio. By ensuring that all the code is where it should be and enabling the page to be accessible, Google is able to read content easily and therefore is more likely to favour sites and will rank them better on SERP’s.

What is WAI?

The World Wide Web Consortium came up with a set of guidelines in 1997 to help people with disabilities access the web; they called these guidelines the Web Accessibility Initiative.

Google likes to know that as web designers and developers we are always working to make the web easily accessible to not only their robots but also to our site users. By having an accessible site Google will recognise the site as a professionally developed and authorative site therefore moving it up the search rankings and in turn helping our SEO.

How can I Be W3C Compliant?

It can be extremely tricky to be W3C compliant if you try to do it yourself. There are a number of tools you can use on Google to find out whether your site is compliant or not. However if you go to any decent Search engine optimisation agency, they should ensure that you site is compliant.
