When you are looking to design a new website or even redesign an old one it can be very confusing especially as there is so much search engine optimisation information on the internet these days. The problem is that most of the advice regarding SEO can be contradictory and some of it will even be out dated, as it's a very fast pace industry and new techniques arise constantly. This blog should provide some help however, because we will give a short overview covering the main and basic points of SEO rather than focusing on one specific point. But please note this is not a complete guide on On-Page SEO.

Firstly, you should brainstorm and write down the key phrases or terms you think are relevant for your website and try to jot down around 5 keyword phrases (that is not a single word but more 'long tail' keywords) for each page on your solution, including the homepage. Then you should check your competition for these keyword phrases. Search for them in Google and see who constantly comes up top for the majority of your keywords. Then have a look at what they use for their meta data. It is thought that Google do not pay a lot of attention to meta data these days but Yahoo still do. And the main reason for doing this is that it's a good place to check out your competitor's keyword terms.

Additionally, you should see what the competition use as Page titles. If they know what they're doing, and they should do if they are on page 1 for the majority of the keyword phrases, then they will be using the most significant keywords in the Page titles. So then to help get you started with your SEO, you need to write down your competitions keywords for pages that are similar themes to your pages. Once you have all this data you are in a good position to narrow down your true keyword phrases. If you are trying to decide which keywords to use, the overriding factor should always be relevancy. This will give you a good start to your search engine optimisation campaign.
