Interflora Penalised For Poor SEO Links

SEO Back In Bloom For Mothers Day

Just in time for Mothers day, Google reinstated Interflora's rankings after they were penalised for bad black hat linking two weeks earlier. The UK flower delivery service managed to recover its search engine optimisation strategy just in time for this Mothering Sunday. A huge event on the florists calendar, this timely resurrection from Google enabled Interflora to maintain sales across this busy period.

Just before Mother's Day, the popular flower website no longer ranked for any of their key terms such as flowers and flower delivery, striking them off results entirely. Whilst Google would not pass comment on the official reason as to why Interflora was penalised, theories have arisen as to it being because of poor linking and link buying. Interflora was found to be using unnatural linking techniques, with 150+ links in advertisements and articles across regional UK new sites. As a result of this, Google retracted Interflora's SEO ranking and removed them from related search terms.

One of the issues Google addressed in the proceeding weeks was the importance of retaining PageRank when links are purchased. Businesses should be wary of anyone that wants to pay you for links to your site that pass on PageRank. Google highlighted that schemes that pass on PageRank using this method, violate quality guidelines and would result in action and penalties. To make sure that you are not penalised for bad linking, make sure that if you do pay for links that they do not pass on PageRank.

White Hat SEO Techniques

If you do not want to lose PageRank or be penalised by Google, it is important to employ reputable white hat search engine optimisation techniques. The selling of paid links is regarded as poor black hat SEO by Google, and will result in poor PageRank and loss of trust. When you build up natural and trustworthy links within your business, Google will see you as a reputable source of information and move you up the rankings.

For business growth it is vital to maintain at the top of search engine results. Over 1.7 billion people use the internet worldwide, and so if you cannot be found online, you business will not flourish. If you are looking to improve your existing PageRank on Google and move up the list of search results, consider employing search engine optimisation specialists.
