What is Digg?
Digg is a place for people to discover and share content across the web, from the biggest online destinations to the most obscure blog. It’s a social bookmarking site designed to show a wider audience an article, image or video that the user feels it worth sharing with the rest of the online community.
Every article submitted to Digg has a count of how many Diggs the story has received. You need to be signed-in to Digg a story and for every registered user that clicks "Digg it" the count goes up one. The more Diggs an article gets, the more people will see the article and want to read on. If a story reaches the tipping point, then it gets promoted to the homepage.
There are two ways to rate an article; You can “Digg” an article, which means you enjoyed the article and want to contribute to the popularity, or “Bury” the article which means that the story either has bad links, off-topic content, or is a duplicate entry.
How does Digg work?
Submit an article.
Once you have found an interesting article, image, or video online then submit it to Digg.com. The submission will immediately appear in “Upcoming Stories,” where other members can find it and, if they like it, Digg it.
Become popular.
Once an article submission has earned a critical mass of Diggs, it becomes “popular” and jumps to the homepage in its category. If it becomes one of the most popular, it qualifies as a “Top 10”. If a submission doesn't receive enough Diggs within a certain time period, it eventually falls out of the “Upcoming” section.
Discover media on Digg.
The “Upcoming” section is where the latest submitted articles go and enables users to discover recently added news, and videos. Track submissions as they come in with Swarm, Stack, Big Spy or Arc, our real-time Flash visualization tools in Digg Labs. These graphics help users to find new and popular articles in a fun and interesting way.
Of course, you can always check the topic homepages to see what's newly popular. And you can subscribe to RSS feeds of particular topics, popular/upcoming sections, individual users, and the search terms of your choice.
